Meet Last Year's Recipient

Despite having already raised their now-adult children, nine years ago Lori and Marv Penrod became the caretakers and legal guardians of Marissa “Rissy” Anderegg, who was born in 2003 with the brain injury hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), resulting in paralysis and epilepsy. Lori and her daughter were visiting nurses to Rissy, and when Rissy’s aunt, with whom she lived, unexpectedly died, Lori and Marv took Rissy in as their own child. Because Rissy loves the outdoors, the Penrods take her to their campsite on Leesville Lake when they can. However, getting her out and taking her to appointments is difficult—currently they have to physically lift her in and out of their vehicle, which has taken a toll as both Rissy and her adoptive parents have aged.

Through Betterment Bash 2023 and the help of Great Lakes Honda, we were able to secure a wheelchair-equipped van for the Penrods, making their lives easier and more fulfilling!

What is the Ripple Effect?

Like one drop of water on the surface of a lake, one act of kindness multiplies into many, creating a ripple effect of giving. Community Betterment’s success lies in our recipients and members who pay it forward, inspiring others to do the same.

How Do We Help Stark County?

Here are just a few ways Canton Betterment makes a difference:

Our annual fundraiser, Betterment Bash, directly raises funds for a local individual, family, or group, be it paying the mortgage for a year for a young mother battling cancer or helping with the much-needed renovation of a food pantry’s restroom. These recipients are nominated by our network, which means as part of our community you can directly help someone you know who is struggling.

Meet 2022's Recipient: Jeanne Maylor

Jeanne Maylor is a single mom and grandmother who survived a tragic motorcycle accident last year but is now paralyzed from the chest down. With the generous help of Bash supporters, we hope to raise money to outfit Jeanne’s van with the necessary controls to allow her to drive herself independently.

What Our Recipients Have to Say

"I’m fighting my hardest (battling cancer). It gives me strength knowing so many wonderful people are behind me!"

Thanks again to Canton Betterment for your encouragement and support.
Because of you, we were able to help so many in such an uncertain time."
